What it is

Gatklettur is a basalt sea arch formed where waves cut through a stack of lava rock. It is part of the same coastline of columns, caves and stacks that makes Arnarstapi worth a stop, and it sits within the area covered by Snæfellsjökull National Park.

How to find it

Park at the harbour, follow the cliff path, and the arch is a short walk away. Combine it with the coastal walk to Hellnar, which starts from the same place.

Photography tips

  • Go early or late for warmer light and fewer visitors.
  • A wide lens fits the arch plus the cliffs.
  • Wipe the sea spray off your lens often.

Do not climb on or near the arch. The edges are unstable and rogue waves are possible. Keep to the marked path.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Gatklettur?

On the coast next to Arnarstapi. Walk a short distance from the harbour along the cliff path to reach it.

Can you walk through the arch?

No. Look at it from the viewpoints on the path. The rock is unstable and the sea is dangerous.

When is the best light for photos?

Low sun in the morning or evening gives the basalt colour. In summer the evening light lasts long.
