Best time to visit Arnarstapi

For long days, birds and easy roads, go from late May to early July. For northern lights and fewer people, September and October are the compromise.

Season by season

Late May to early July. Daylight lasts almost around the clock, seabirds are active and the roads are usually clear. This is also the busiest and most expensive period, so book ahead.

July and August. Warm by Icelandic standards and the highest mountain roads open. Expect crowds at Kirkjufell and on the Arnarstapi to Hellnar path.

September and October. Autumn colours on the lava, fewer visitors and dark enough nights for northern lights. Daylight shrinks quickly.

November to March. Short days, snow and ice. Some places close. This is for aurora chasers and confident winter drivers. A guided tour is a safe option. See driving safety.

April and early May. Quiet and changeable. Some mountain roads are still closed.

Which month for what

You want Go in
Seabirds and long daylight Late May to July
The glacier road open Usually July to August (it depends on snow)
Northern lights Late September to early April
Fewer crowds May, September

Daylight is the real limit. In midwinter you get only a few usable hours, so plan one or two stops a day rather than a full peninsula circuit.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Arnarstapi?

Late May to early July if you want long daylight and birdlife, or September to early October if you want the chance of northern lights with milder weather and fewer people.

Can you see puffins at Arnarstapi?

Seabirds nest on the cliffs in summer. Puffins are generally seen from late spring to the first half of August, but for puffin-focused trips ask a local operator.

Is Arnarstapi worth visiting in winter?

Yes if you accept short days and changeable roads. Winter gives snow-covered scenery and a chance of aurora, but you need to check road conditions every day.
