The route

Start by the statue of Bárður Snæfellsás or at the harbour. The path passes Gatklettur and follows the edge of the sea cliffs, with basalt columns, caves and seabird ledges beside you. Further on it crosses an old lava field and descends into Hellnar, where there is a café near the coast.

How to do it

  1. One way, then a lift. If you have two cars, or a taxi or tour that will meet you.
  2. Out and back. Walk to Hellnar, rest, and return. Allow 2 to 3 hours in total.
  3. Part of the way. Many visitors walk just to the cliff viewpoints and Gatklettur.

Bring a hot drink and layers. There is little shelter on the path. Wind often makes it feel colder than the forecast.

Respect nesting birds. In the breeding season keep to the path, keep dogs on a lead where allowed and do not approach the cliffs for photos.
