What to expect

Arnarstapi sits right on the Atlantic coast, so there is little shelter from wind. Temperatures stay within a narrow range through the year, and what changes most is rain, wind and daylight. Fog can hide the glacier for days, then clear suddenly.

What to pack

  • Waterproof jacket and rain trousers
  • Warm layers (wool or fleece), hat and gloves
  • Sturdy walking shoes with grip, since the cliff path can be wet
  • A thermos for the walk to Hellnar
  • Sunglasses for low sun and snow glare

Parking and getting around

There is parking near the harbour and the village. In peak season it fills, so arrive early or late in the day. Wind can slam car doors, so hold them with both hands.

Check before you go

Look at the forecast on vedur.is and the road map on road.is. See our best time to visit page for how the seasons compare.

Wind warnings are real. In strong wind the cliff path and exposed roads can be dangerous. If a yellow or orange warning is out, change your plans.
